Every die set on a TDP-pattern press — the TDP-0, TDP-1.5, and TDP-5 alike — follows the same universal tooling standard, so the swap procedure below is identical across the whole line. The one thing worth remembering going in: fill depth and compression force are specific to the tooling that's currently installed, so they reset to zero every time you change a die, even if you're going back to a set you've used before.

What You Need Before You Start

  • The press, powered off (or not being cranked, on the TDP-0).
  • The new die set — die, upper punch, lower punch — along with the wrench included with every set.
  • A clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the turret station before installing the new tooling.

Step 1: Power Off and Release Pressure

Turn off the press, or simply stop cranking on the manual TDP-0. Back off the compression force screw fully before touching any tooling — working on a die set under load is the fastest way to damage a punch or a finger.

Step 2: Remove the Old Punches

Withdraw the upper punch first, then the lower punch, using the included wrench to loosen any retaining hardware. Set both aside somewhere they won't roll or collect dust — powder residue on a punch face left sitting out is one of the easier ways to scratch it before the next use.

Step 3: Remove the Old Die

With both punches clear, lift the die straight up out of the turret station. Wipe the station clean before moving on — leftover powder or a stray fragment under the new die is a common cause of it not seating flush.

Step 4: Seat the New Die

Lower the new die into the turret station so it sits flush and square, with no visible gap or tilt. A die that isn't fully seated will bind or wear unevenly once punches are reinstalled and force is applied.

Step 5: Install the Lower Punch

Insert the lower punch through the die bore from below and confirm it travels freely without binding before moving on. Resistance here usually means the die isn't seated correctly — recheck Step 4 rather than forcing the punch through.

Step 6: Install the Upper Punch

Fit the upper punch and secure the retaining hardware wrench-tight — snug, not over-torqued. Overtightening retaining hardware is a common cause of premature wear on the punch shank.

Step 7: Turn the Flywheel by Hand

Before restoring power or compression force, rotate the flywheel manually through at least one full cycle. You're checking for smooth, unobstructed punch travel — any grinding or resistance means something isn't seated correctly and needs to be rechecked before you apply force.

Step 8: Re-Set Fill Depth and Force
