Short answer: Level the press, install the matched punch and die set, set fill depth and compression force with the motor off, then start the motor at its lowest speed and check tablets before ramping up. The TDP-1.5 and TDP-5 use the same setup sequence — they just differ in the force and fill-depth range available.

A motorized press adds one variable a manual press doesn't have: motor speed. Everything else — tooling installation, fill depth, compression force — works the same way on the TDP-1.5 and TDP-5 as it does on the manual TDP-0. The main risk with a motor is running it at full speed before your settings are actually dialed in, which turns a small fill-depth mistake into a much bigger batch of bad tablets before you notice.

What You Need Before You Start

  • The press (TDP-1.5 or TDP-5), positioned near a matching power outlet — both run on 110V or 220V, single phase.
  • A matched punch and die set sized for your target tablet — up to 8mm diameter on the TDP-1.5, up to 20mm on the TDP-5.
  • A free-flowing direct-compression powder, such as ReadyBlend.
  • A digital scale and thickness gauge to check test tablets.
  • Safety glasses — standard practice once a press is running under motor power rather than a hand crank.

Step 1: Position and Level the Press

Set the press on a stable bench within reach of a compatible outlet. The TDP-1.5 (55–60kg) and TDP-5 (132kg) are both heavy enough to stay put during operation, but confirm the base is level before running — vibration from an uneven surface will show up as inconsistent tablet weight long before it shows up as anything else.

Step 2: Install the Punch and Die Set

With the press powered off, seat the die in the turret station and fit the upper and lower punches so they move freely through the bore. Step 3: Set Fill Depth and Force — With the Motor Off

Do this part manually, before the motor is running. Adjust the fill-depth cam for your target tablet weight (up to 16mm on the TDP-1.5, up to 18mm on the TDP-5), then set compression force starting low and working up gradually — up to 15 kN on the TDP-1.5 or 50 kN on the TDP-5. Setting both with the machine off lets you turn the flywheel by hand to confirm the punch travels smoothly before power is involved.

Step 4: Start the Motor at Low Speed

Switch on the motor at its lowest speed setting and let it run for several dozen cycles before touching the speed dial. This is the step that's easy to skip and the one that matters most — a fill-depth or force problem missed at low speed becomes a much larger batch of bad tablets once you're running at production pace.

Step 5: Check Tablets and Adjust

Pull tablets at low speed and check three things before increasing pace:

  1. Weight — on target from the fill-depth setting.
  2. Thickness — up to 6mm on the TDP-1.5, up to 8mm on the TDP-5.
  3. Hardness — holds together without capping or crumbling.

Adjust fill depth or force as needed, re-check, then move to Step 6 once tablets are consistent for two or three checks in a row.

Step 6: Run the Batch and Monitor

Increase to production speed — up to 5,400 tablets/hr on the TDP-1.5, up to 4,800 tablets/hr on the TDP-5 — and keep the hopper topped up. Listen for the motor: a change in sound partway through a run is usually the first sign of a jam, a worn punch, or powder buildup in the die, and it's worth stopping to check rather than letting it continue.

Step 7: Power Down and Clean

Switch off the motor before removing tooling. Take out the punches and die, clean all powder-contact surfaces with a lint-free cloth (isopropyl alcohol for residue), and dry everything fully before storing — the S7 tool steel tooling resists wear well but corrodes if put away damp.
