Short answer: A tablet press that isn't compressing at all — producing loose powder or nothing instead of a solid tablet — almost always traces back to one of five causes, in roughly this order of likelihood: the fill depth is set too shallow so there's little or no powder in the die, the upper punch isn't installed or seated correctly, the compression force adjustment is backed off too far, the punch and die set are mismatched or damaged, or powder buildup is jamming the mechanism. Work through them in order rather than guessing, since the first two cover the large majority of cases for someone new to a press.

Check Fill Depth First

The single most common cause for a first-time user: the fill depth is set so shallow that little or no powder is actually entering the die cavity before compression happens. If the die cavity is empty or nearly empty, there's nothing for the punches to compress into a tablet. Confirm the Upper Punch Is Installed and Seated Correctly

If the upper punch isn't fully seated, isn't installed at all, or is installed in the wrong orientation, the press can cycle without ever actually contacting the powder in the die. Check the Compression Force Adjustment

Every press has a compression force (or pressure) adjustment, and if it's backed off too far — common on a press fresh out of the box, or after cleaning and reassembly — the punches may close without applying enough force to bond the powder at all. Increase the setting incrementally and test after each adjustment rather than making one large change, since too much force introduces its own problems.

Inspect for a Mismatched or Damaged Punch and Die Set

A punch that doesn't match its die — wrong size, wrong tooling standard, or simply paired with the wrong die from a mixed set — won't compress correctly even if everything else is set up right, and can also damage the tooling. Clear Jams and Obstructions
