A manual TDP-0 tops out around 30–50 tablets a minute as a burst rate, but sustained hand-cranking is tiring — most operators settle into a slower, steadier pace well before the hour mark. If a single batch now regularly takes an hour or more of continuous cranking, the labor cost and operator fatigue are themselves an argument for motorizing.
2. Orders are recurring, not one-off. R&D and trial batches are naturally intermittent — you run one, evaluate it, adjust, run another. Once you're filling the same order on a repeat schedule (weekly, biweekly, monthly), that's production, not testing, and production rewards a machine that doesn't depend on operator stamina for consistent throughput.
3. Weight consistency is starting to matter more than flexibility. Hand-crank speed naturally varies stroke to stroke, which can show up as more tablet-to-tablet weight variation than a motorized press at fixed speed. If you're past the stage of "does this formulation work" and into "does every tablet meet spec," motorized compression removes operator pace as a variable.
4. You need to run longer batches without babysitting the machine. A motorized press frees the operator to prep the next batch, run QC checks, or handle other work while tablets are being pressed — a manual press requires continuous hands-on operation for as long as it's running.
5. You're close to your current press's force or output ceiling. The TDP-0 tops out at 3.1 kN and roughly 3,000 tablets/hour theoretical. If your formulation needs more compression force to hit target hardness, or your order volume is regularly bumping against that ceiling, the press itself — not just the crank — has become the constraint.

Most labs moving off a TDP-0 land on the TDP-1.5 ($1,095) first: motorized, up to 5,400 tablets/hour, but still hand-crankable if you need it — a genuine middle step rather than a full commitment to production scale. It's the right move if your batch sizes and order volume are growing steadily but not yet at full commercial scale.
Jump straight to the TDP-5 ($1,495) instead if you already know you need its 50 kN of force or up to 20mm tablet diameter — larger or denser tablets, or formulations that need more compression force to avoid capping, won't be solved by the TDP-1.5's lower 15 kN ceiling.
